After General Eric Ken Shinseki became chief of staff of the Army in 1999, the Museum Society decided to establish a Shinseki Gallery in Battery Randolph to portray a worthy model for the school children and cadets of the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) who regularly visit the museum. General Shinseki, born on Kau'ai and educated in the public schools of Hawaii, was the first American of Asian ancestry to wear the four stars of a full general and to become chief of his service.
The community responded with enthusiasm. A testimonial dinner in November 2003 filled the Hawaii Convention Center and raised a substantial fund for the Shinseki Endowment in the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation. The trustees of the Museum Society thought it appropriate to commission a brief biography of the general's life to go with the exhibit. They asked Richard Halloran, formerly of the New York Times as a military correspondent in Washington, D.C., and foreign correspondent in Asia, to write it. We are pleased to present his excellent book.

Testimonials"General Eric Shinseki, rising from modest means on the island of Kauai to the office of chief of staff, the uniformed leader of the Army, personifies the best in the American people and their Army. "From our days at West Point, Ric Shinseki and I soldiered in the same Army for almost four decades. He has distinguished himself as a warrior in combat, as a commander who cares deeply about his soldiers, and as a leader steeped in the principles of "When Ric Shinseki was promoted from colonel to brigadier general, I asked him to bring honor to our home state of Hawaii. He has done that and more, bringing honor to all Japanese-Americans, to all Asian-Americans who have ever served in the armed forces, and to an America that cares more for your devotion to duty than the color of your skin or the shape of your eyes." |
